In high school, my graduating class was 118 students and I knew all of them, I was very involved in extra-curricular activities ranging from athletics to leadership positions. When I got into college I was expecting to be equally as involved but when I started my undergraduate career at Florida State University I felt intimidated by the sheer magnitude of the school so I focused on school work and friends. After a year and a half I decided to transfer to Florida International University where I thought I would feel more comfortable since I am a Miami girl after all, this is home. Since I had already begun to take my pre-requisites at FSU I was able to finally start classes that interested me, classes that would broaden my understanding of the world and help me look at things with a global perspective.
My Introduction to International Relations course during my first semester at FIU taught me important things about world history and gifted me with some of the tools I would need to succeed in future courses. The course was heavily discussion based and as an empathetic I was able to more closely understand others perspective on issues. In my International Protection of Human Rights class a few semesters after, my interest for Human Rights flourished and I found my specialty. I learned about the 30 articles in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the importance of education in this world. Through this newly-found passion I was able to secure an internship position with International Solidarity for Human Rights and continue to expand my global awareness.
The shift in my view on the world is a result of the programs that I participated in and the people I networked with thanks to my experiences as a global learning student. This last semester has truly opened my eyes to the possibilities that being globally engaged has to offer. I have been able to partake in open forums regarding the democratic state of our nation, I can knowledgeably speak to my peers about the importance of being a conscious consumer and living a more sustainable life and I can, with an open mind carry out conversation with those who may not share the exact same beliefs.
My current dream or future plan is to move to Denver, Colorado and work with International Development Enterprises or the iDE which creates income and livelihood opportunities for rural households around the globe. I believe this company’s mission aligns with my values and it is a business that I successfully incorporates the global entities; perspective, awareness and engagement, with human interaction. My goal is to be happy and I am happiest when I am helping other people. I believe that through this enriching global experience, I have adopted better interpersonal communication skills via different mediums which will shine during my future job interviews.
